Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez
Maria Josefa Ortiz Tellez-Giron Crescencia better known as Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez or Corregidora (Mexico City, April 19, 1773 - Mexico City, March 2, 1829) wasinsurgent Independence of Mexico and wife of Corregidor of Querétaro, Miguel Dominguez.
After marrying the Corregidor Miguel Dominguez and live in Queretaro was a key to the beginning of the struggle forIndependence from Mexico who led the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores.
It was one of the participants in the conspiracy of Querétaro. His parents were Pedro Ortiz-captain of the regimentof Greens and Manuela. Born in New Valladolid (now Morelia). His father was killed in his duty, when Josefa was just a girl. His mother died shortly after. Thus, what would Corregidor de Querétaro wasin charge of her older sister, Maria Sotero Ortiz, Josefa who supported to enter the prestigious Colegio de las Vizcaínas of Mexico City. She married Miguel Domínguez, a frequent visitor to theschool, in the year 1791. In 1802 Miguel Dominguez was promoted by the viceroy of New Spain to the position of Mayor of the city of Santiago de Querétaro.
Doña Josefa was identified with the abusesuffered by the community of Creole by the Spaniards, as they called the Spanish born in the peninsula, she was a Creole. The Creoles were considered second class citizens by the colonial regime, by virtueof being born in New Spain (colony) and in the metropolis.Therefore, they were relegated to second-level positions in public administration of the viceroyalty. This created great discontent over theyears, and the natives began to organize in literary groups which spread the ideas of the Enlightenment, banned by the Catholic Church. Doña Josefa was integrated into one of these companies, andconvinced her husband afterwards, joining her as well.
