Introduction
The effect Adolf Hitler has had on the world is undeniable. Unfortunately, there are many people who become preoccupied with what he did and forget to ask the question “why?” We have become a very visual society with the proliferation of TV and movies. Documentaries that show the horrors of war captivate their audience into a hypnotic and mind numbinglull. The audience puts their brain on hold while their visual and auditory senses take in the sights and sounds of old black and white movies as the narrator drones on about this big battle and that act of murder and when it is over...the viewer gets up and fixes a sandwich. Such passivity by the masses is exactly what Hitler used to gain power. We have become so accustomed to seeing the samestories over and over, and even in school children are taught the dates, places, and given a general run-down of the 'facts' without being told the reasons. When a child in history class is foolish enough to raise his or her little hand and ask “Why did he do it?” the teacher immediately feels a tightening in her stomach as she belches out “Hitler hated Jews” and the class continues as if thatexplanation were adequate. It is not. This usually happens because the teacher does not know the answer herself or because she fears the act of discussing it or because the only response she knows is the general vague answer she has heard so often. No one asks “why” and in the rare occasion when they do ask, they are either shut down with a flood of contradictory and overly simplistic answers or called aracist or Nazi for daring to ask the most obvious questions. When they ask once, they learn never to ask again. Even today, the meaning of the Nazi party and of the name Hitler has become diluted by those who seek to misuse the terms for their own purposes. If a person of limited intelligence does not like a political figure, a president, a company, they point a finger at the object of theirdislike and blurt out words like fascist, Nazi, Hitler, without even understanding what they mean. This kind of casual invocation of the name Hitler or the word Nazi is in itself a sign of disrespect to those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. These people will call the U.S. President a Nazi but the same person cocks their head to the side in confusion when they are asked about the Nazi 25 pointpolitical platform. This person touches up photos of a political figure to add a Hitler-mustache, uploads it to his blog and calls the political figure another Hitler yet the accuser has no idea who Hitler was and could not list five points of similarity with the politician they wish to slander. This attitude has become a security blanket for the masses. When we dislike something we wrap up in ourcomfy blanket and claim that anyone who takes action we dislike is a Nazi or another Hitler. This yelling and finger pointing may make some emotionally hollow people feel better about themselves but it hides the truth. The question is “why?” What drove Hitler? To simply say hatred is inadequate. To simply say he was a racist or antiSemite is to paint the fence while forgetting about the rest ofthe house. There are many people today filled with much greater hatred and many bigger racists but they do not rise to be leaders of a

nation. They do not inspire millions to follow them or to carry out their will without question. Why did the people of Germany follow Hitler proudly and why did those in other countries even welcome his invading...
