Colombia is part of the Caribbean South America, is a very beautiful country that has very nice people and costumes. Advanced cultures have lived in this country for a lot of centuries. Some giantstone statues and tombs are found in Colombia that have been existing for more than 1,500 years old. Chibcha people had a well-developed civilization. They had a famous culture and many known customslike that new rulers were covered with gold dust and then taken to a lake to wash the gold off their body. All this customs inspired the legend of El Dorado or the Golden One that describes a marvelous,rich land.
Spanish explorers arrived on the Caribbean coast of South America about on 1500s. Their objective was to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Spaniards and their descendants set up largeestates. Powerful Spanish landlords forced South American Indians and enslaved Africans to work the land. On 1700s after years of fighting, independence of Colombia was achieved. After Independence,debate occurred in Colombia. People argued over how much power of the central government and the Roman Catholic Church should have. The different regions of Colombia had little contact with each other.They developed separate economies and identities. Uniting these different groups into one country was very hard. Outbreaks of violence throughout the 1800s and 1900s killed a lot of people. Colombiatoday is Caribbean South America’s most populous country. Today the national capital is Bogota, a city that is located high in the eastern Andes. Rivers, such as the Cauca and Magdalena, flow downfrom the Andes to the Caribbean. Few people live in the tropical rain forest regions of southern Colombia. Colombia’s economy is mostly focused on several valuable resources. Rich soil produces worldfamous Colombian coffee.
