En el sureste de México y parte de Centroamérica, pueblos
hablantes de lenguas mayas iniciaron su desarrollo cultural,
aproximadamente 2,000 años a.C. y en la actualidad aun
habitaban en esa región sus descendientes: chontales, choles
chortis, yucatecos, tzetzales, lacandones, entre otros.

Los mayas forjaron una de las más brillantes culturas
mesoamericanas y destacaron en la ciencia yel arte; construyeron
grandes centros cívico-ceremoniales y ciudades, con
pirámides y templos alrededor de patios y plazas, en los que
colocaban estelas y altares. Políticamente se organizaron en
estados independientes y también fueron poderosos guerreros.

Crearon una escritura jeroglífica propia y un sistema
de numeración posicional vigesimal, que implico la previa
invención yutilización del concepto matemático del cero,
siglos antes de que los europeos lo conocieran por conducto
de los árabes.

Se distinguieron por sus conocimientos matemáticos
astronómicos; desarrollaron un sistema calendárico casi
perfecto con un punto de partida o fecha Era; conocieron la
duración del ciclo solar, de las lunaciones, del ciclo de Venus
y fueron capaces de predecir eclipses.INTRODUCTION

Las principales características de la identidad y cultura maya son de suma importancia en nuestro país, ya que representan nuestras raíces, nuestra cultura y es un enlace con nuestro pasado el cual está lleno de historia. A pesar de eso muchas personas no lo toman así, la identidad y la cultura maya ha ido cambiando o deformándose con el paso deltiempo y, en la actualidad la mayoría de la gente se ha olvidado del verdadero significado del tema, es por esta razón que se deben inculcar en las generaciones más pequeñas la gran importancia de la identidad y la cultura maya, pues estas son las que nos distinguen de los demás países y las cuales nos hacen únicos.
