In Ecuador there are millions of illiterate people, even more in rural communities.  However, for a long time, there have been no serious programs to combat it becauseno one of our leaders have the priority to educate the people.  Why?.Poverty and the lack of opportunities are the factors for which a great number of Ecuadorians do not have access to education; thismeans a serious social problem. To begin to deal with the topic, I think it is necessary to define what is the meaning of illiterate person:  UNESCO´S (1978) definition:  “An illiterate person is aperson who cannot read or understand what is written nor write a simple and brief description of their daily live.

Poverty causes that many children were not be able to attend classes or they guiltschool when they are very young without having completed primary school to begin work, or because their parents don`t have the sufficient financial resources to pay expenses such as: uniforms or schoolsupplies.  If people do not have money for food, they are not in condition for having education. In general, this problem represents more poverty and becomes a vicious cycle without end. Anotherimportant factor is the lack of opportunities.  The Ecuadorian state has no a serious plan to reduce illiteracy in the country. In Ecuador there are 731,984 illiterate people, representing 9% of thepopulation, those who cannot read and write. 1`731.151 functionally illiterate people, representing 21% are those who do not complete and educational process; together these values show that 1 in 3ecuadorians people are illiterate.  This is a serious social problem which is the basis for generating other problems.   The question is why has nobody done anything to combat this problem?  Maybe it`sbecause our leaders are not interested in educating the people.  It is easier to manage and control people if they are ignorant?
