Introduction
The passive voice is a construction or verb conjugationin some languages in which the subject is presented as a liability, while the action represented by the verb is performed by a supplement. It is very easy to build, is based on a combination of the verb "to be" How to be (never be) in the appropriate time, plus the past participle of the verb which we combine, they will match in gender and number with the new subject. The subject of the activevoice goes, in the passive voice, to be preceded by the preposition "by" and become what we call human agency.
Passive Voice
The passive voice is used when you want to express an action placing more emphasis on the object that the person performing the action. For example:
You boil the water for two minutes.
This sentence indicates that someone boil water for two minutes. In the next sentence,however, expressed the same but no matter who performs that action.
The passive voice is used when you want to express an action placing more emphasis on the object that the person performing the action.
The Passive Voice (La voz pasiva)
We have spoken of the active voice where the action of the verb focus on the subject. But when we give more importance to the action and not to those whohave it, use the passive voice.
* Ejemplos/Examples
* La voz activa
* He ate all of the cookies. (Comió todas las galletas.)
* La voz pasiva
* All of the cookies were eaten. (Todas las galletas fueron comidas.)
Grammatical Rules (Reglas gramaticales)
Passive voice is formed with the auxiliary verb "to be" and the past participle of the verb.
Structure Subject + auxiliary verb("to be") + past participle.
* Ejemplos:
* The speech is written for the president. (El discurso está escrito para el presidente.)
* The house was built in 1975. (La casa fue construida en 1975.)
* My wallet has been stolen. (Ha sido robada mi cartera.)
* The room will be cleaned while we are out. (Se limpiará la habitación mientras estemos fuera.)
To change an active sentenceto passive we consider the following points:
1. the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive.
2. The main verb is replaced by the auxiliary "to be" at the same time along the main verb participle.
3. The main subject of the sentence becomes the passive agent complement
4. If we mention in the prayer of the subject performing the action (subject agent), this willnormally introduced by the preposition "by".
* Examples:
* Mark Twain wrote the book. → the book was written by Mark Twain.
* The housekeeper will clean the room. → the room will be cleaned by the housekeeper.
Uses
1. Usamos la voz pasiva cuando no sabemos quién ha hecho la acción.
* Ejemplos:
* A civilian has been killed. (Un civil ha sido asesinado.)
* The carwas stolen. (El coche fue robado.)
2. Usamos la voz pasiva cuando queremos dar importancia a lo que pasó, más que a quién hizo la acción o cuando no queremos decir quien lo hizo.
* Ejemplos:
* The letter was delivered yesterday. (La carta fue entregada ayer.)
* A mistake was made. (Un error fue cometido.)
