The genetic modification of food crops is a very controversial topic.However, it is an extremelyrelevant topic because by 2050, the planet will have to provide food for 8-12 billion people. So what is genetic modification? It is a technique in which individual genes can be copied andtransferred into another living organism.In genetic modification, the genetic structure is changed by adding or removing specific characteristics.
Scientists hope that by genetically alteringcrops, they by genetically altering crops, they will be able to improve resistance to diseases caused by insects or viruses, and to increase tolerance to herbicides and extreme weatherconditions. The US is the world leader in biotech crops. In fact, aproximately modified, as is 70% of all US soybeans are genetically modified, as is 70% os its cotton, and 30% of its corn.
