Intrinsic Motivation in the English Classroom
YUORSTH BASTIDAS.
“Many students seem extrinsically motivated. They are motivated by, and rewarded for their academic efforts with, points, grades,degrees, and jobs. Many instructors want students to be motivated also by the love of learning, knowledge for the sake of knowledge, and positive feelings about themselves. By definition, we cannotforce or require intrinsic motivation.” (URL 1). According to this definition given by Kathleen McKinney, the success of the teaching-learning process depends on the strategies that the teacher uses tomake possible that the student acquire English willingly not for grades as usually occurs, specifically it can be detected that the problem in the classrooms is lack of intrinsic motivation and thequestion posed is ¿What can teachers do to motivate SL students intrinsically?
The intrinsic motivation is considered very important for academic and industrial fields because it refers to the internaldesire to perform a particular task, people do certain activities because it gives them pleasure and help them to develop a particular skill. On the other hand, we have extrinsic motivations which arefactors external to the individual and unrelated to the task they are performing, for instance money, good grades and other rewards. (URL 2) In education, the intrinsic is needed to achieve qualitygoals and a higher academic performance in the teaching of any area.
English classes, in the case of this specific research, should be motivating for students; having the opportunity to explore andlearn not only a language but also the culture where this L2 is held is something interesting and important if we relate this handling two or more different languages with the globalization has aninternational phenomenon that brings more possibilities in order to succeed in more work fields after students leave college.
