This paperpresents a facility layout expert system, named FLEXPERT (Facility Layout Expert), based on the theory of fuzzy logic. The proposed approach considers the multicriteria nature of the layout problem andthe fuzziness of the input data through the integration of an expert system and a fuzzy algorithm (Arif, 1993) with a facility layout program. The system generates the best layout that satisfies thequalitative as well as the quantitative constraints on the layout problem. This facilitates the incorporation of the knowledge of facility layout experts. BLOCPLAN (Donaghey and Pire, 1991) is thefacility layout algorithm used by FLEXPERT. The commercial software, VP-Expert, is used as the expert system development shell.
Expert system approaches to facility layout have attracted attention inrecent literature. FADES (Knowledge-Based Facility Layout) (Fisher and Nof, 1984) is an expert system that uses quantitative information such as flow, distance and material handling cost to generate alayout based on a series of expert rules. Arinze et al. (1989) proposed a methodology for the design of a knowledge-based decision support system (KDSS) for facility layout planning, which incorporatesconstruction-type and improvement-type algorithms.
