Japan: “Land of the Rising Sun”
Japan is an island country in the North Pacific Ocean consisting of 4 major islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shotoku.
The Japanese call their mountainous islandcountry Nippon which means source of the sun… the name Japan is derived from Cipango the name given to it by Marco Polo
About 74% of Japan is mountainous, with a mountain range running through each ofthe main islands. Japan's highest mountain is Mt. Fuji, with an elevation of 3,776 m. Since so very little flat area exists, many hills and mountainsides are cultivated all the way to the top.Japan’s natural resources include coal, oil, iron resources, fish, and mineral resources. While the land use is divided in arable land: 11%, permanent crops: 1%, permanent pastures: 2%, forests and woodland:17%, and other: 19%.
Climate in Japan varies with altitude and with location on the Pacific Ocean or on the Sea of Japan; Japan is generally a rainy country with high humidity. Northern Japan haswarm summers but long, cold winters with heavy snow. Central Japan has hot, humid summers and short winters, and southwestern Japan has long, hot, humid summers and mild winters.
Natural Hazards:
Tenpercent of the world's active volcanoes are found in Japan, which lies in a zone of extreme crustal instability. As many as 1,500 earthquakes are recorded yearly, and magnitudes of four to six on theRichter scale are common. Today, Japan has become a world leader in research on causes and prediction of earthquakes. The development of advanced technology has permitted the construction ofskyscrapers even in earthquake-prone areas.

The economy of Japan is the third largest in the world after the United States and the People's Republic of China but ahead of Germany at 4th.
