Methodology III
Essay Part
1. Read chapter 10 and write about context, style and class. Create an example based on the information you analyzed.
Strategy: Write a brief explanation of these factors and provide an example to illustrate it, check the information given in your textbook.
Context.- Context reflects where the language is used, the context can differ from one situation toother. The context could be formal or casual. Also the vocabulary differs according to the context.
Style.- Is adapted according to the audience for example if the interview is between two strangers careful style or vernacular can be found. People use more vernacular language when describe a situation where they had been in danger. Vernacular style is associated with a comfortable, relay and familiarscenario.
Class.- Depending on the social group, the vernacular pronunciation will be presented. A low frequency of vernacular pronunciation o a higher frequency of standard pronunciation will signal if the speaker belongs to a high social class. Stylistic variation differs according the social groups. The more sophisticated group, the more formal speech is used. Also according the socialbackground the class will be reflected.
Example according to the context
1. A couple at their house
A couple is talking about their divorce they offend each other and argue without control. We can see trough this example that the context used is rude.
2. At a lawyer´s office
The same couple talks about their divorce with respect to each other because there is the lawyer. At this example we cansee the opposite because someone strange is present.
Example according to the style
1. Two friends talking
Friend 1 Hi, How are you?
Friend 2 I’m fine
Friend 1 How was your exam?
Friend 2 It was hard, but fortunately I got an A
Friend 1 Congratulations

The style used between friends is relaxed and informal, they have confidence each other.
3. Friend 1 with the teacher
TeacherMiss Alvarado. Come here!
Student yes, Miss Lopez
Teacher I want to show you your grades. These are A, C,B,C
Student Oh I don’t know what to say. I will try to improve
Teacher You should work hard otherwise you will be in trouble
Student Ok, Miss Lopez
With this example we can see that the style is different, the student talk with respect and consideration to the teacher.
Exampleaccording to the class
1. Conversation between two guys at the street
Guy 1 What’s up buddy?
Guy 2 Hi man y
Guy 1 Let’s go to see females
Guy 2 Ok, let’s go
This conversation shows that they are not higher class.
2. A tea meeting between two women
Woman 1 Hello dear
Woman 2 Hello
Woman 1 Have sit please
Woman 2 Thank you
Woman 1 Would you like two or three teaspoons of sugar foryour tea
Woman 2 Just two, sweetheart. I’m on diet
This conversations show us that they respect to each other and they represent a higher class.
2.Read chapter 11 and write about the functions of speech and write three example for expressive, directive and referential utterances.
Strategy: Analyze the functions of speech and write about their main characteristics, then exemplify them.

Wecan find different functions in everyday conversation such as:

Expressive, when the speaker´s feelings are expressed. Example:
1. When a girl got good grades and her mom says “I´m really proud of you, I love you”.
2. When a man is in love and says to his girl “I´m in love with you, would you marry me”.
3. When two friends are arguing because one of them tells someone else their secret, theother says. I´m really disappointed, I can’t trust on you anymore.

Directive, attempt to get someone to do something. Example:
1. When the teacher says “Miss Alvarado go to the board”.
2. When is 8 at night and a mom says to her daughter “I time to go to bed, Karen”
3. When a boss says to the secretary “Don’t answer the phone this morning”
