HISTORIA DE RUSSIA
Before the first century, the vast lands of southern Russia were populated by several tribes, widely scattered across the vast territory, such as proto-Indo-Europeans and Scythians. Between the third century and the steppes sixth century were devastated by successive waves of nomadic invasions, led by warlike tribes who often continue their advance into Europe, as was the caseof the Huns and Avars.

During the period from the seventh century V to human progress are represented by the culture of Dyakovo, at the height of iron, which occupied the Upper Volga area, the Valday and Oka River area. Dyakovo culture consisted of Finno-Ugric people, the ancestors of the tribes Merya, Muroma, Meshchera and Veps. Like many other parts of Eurasia, these territories were overrun by theMongols, forming the state of the Golden Horde to loot the Russian principalities for over three centuries. About half of the Russian population will perish during the Mongol invasion, later known as Tatars, will rule the southern and central expanses of Russia while the current territories of Ukraine and Belarus will be incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland, thus dividing theRussians from Belarus to the north and west Ukrainians.

As in the Balkans, nomadic movement slowed economic and social development of the country. However, the Novgorod Republic together with Pskov retained some degree of autonomy during the time of the Mongol yoke and were able to largely avoid the atrocities that affected the rest of the country.
