SCORE CRITERIA 2 Full Reading Comprehension – A thorough understanding of the reading concept has been demonstrated. The student’s response is correct and complete and provides evidence of higher-order thinking related to the question/task. Details in the response are clear,accurate, and text-based. Partial Reading Comprehension – Partial understanding of the reading concept has been demonstrated. The student’s response provides some information that is text-based and accurate. However, the response is not complete and may not provide clear evidence of higher-order thinking related to the question/task. Little or No Reading Comprehension – The student’s responsedemonstrates very little or no understanding of the reading concept being assessed. The response is inaccurate or unrelated to the question/task.

Score Point 2 The student’s response shows a full understanding of the reading concept. The response must contain TWO ways someone can help the whales using text-baseddetails in order to receive full credit. This student provides two details: “to donate money” and “clean the oceans”. These are both correct. “Helping pay for supplies” is considered to be the same detail as “donate money” and cannot stand alone as an answer. The other two details are enough to make the response correct and complete.

Score Point 2 The student demonstrates full reading comprehension. He/she uses two direct quotes from the story as examples of how someone can help the whales. The first one, (“How can You help? Adopt a whale! ) is a direct quote from the story and is accepted even though it is also the title of the story. The second one, (“If you want to help, ask your librarian or teacher for moreinformation.”) is also accepted. The student could possibly research different ways to help the whales. The response is complete.
