Ivan the great- leader of the muscovys
The muscovys had the right to conquer Russia because Ivan said h was going to lead a holy war to lead the Muslim Mongols out ofRussia, he claims descent from the founder of Kiev, rurick is the man, and then he said that he descended by marriage from the bicintine emperor.
1453- the ottomans conquer Constantinople.
Moscow(the 3rd Rome) that's what Ivan called
Tsar has to do with Caesar
The khan of the north is Ivan
He calls himself khan to justify their power.
The muscovite tsar control their newly conquered landby feudalism, the boyars fight for the muscovite and they rule the land they conquer under the tsar
Land expansion was important because they had to keep the boyars happy and they needed more land tomake more food to make more money to improve.
Ivan the terrible expanded Russia but was crazy and tortured animals. His wife kept him in check but she died and destroyed Novgorod, and killed both hissons.

There was a fight over power after Ivan the terrible died.

Peter the great-
He turned Russia into a world power from badtroubles.
He wanted to copy France on the absolute monarchy.
He copied the louis.
He wanted this because it would give him all the power.
To make an absolute monarchy he needed a loyal army that isn'tcontrolled by the boyars, the boyars have to become the people who fill government, to do this he needs money which he will get with trade.
He wanted a navy because to trade because trade is on thewater (maritime trade)
He went to war with the ottoman because he wants to get access to the water
Westernization was important to him because he wants his boyars to dress like a French person,...
