Number the Stars by Louis Lowry

In this story it talks mostly about the holocaust. This story is describing the life of a girl named Annemarie and her friend Ellen. Apparently it seems like the Nazi have invaded their town of Denmark. The Nazis were these cruel, cruel people that thought exterminating all without blonde hair and blue eyes would help the country. The Nazis had onespecific ruler called Adolf Hitler who even polished a book blaming different cultures that they were the fault of Germany‘s debt. Adolf Hitler used to be in jail until he wrote the book about the Jews the Gypsies and many others. People believed him because they had a problem and anyone who said they could fix it was basically a saint. Now the really ironic thing is that Hitler did not have blondehair and blue eyes he had dark hair and brown eyes. Annemarie’s family is Christian and did not have to be sent to concentration camps but Ellen’s family did. That is basically the whole basic idea of the story.

The first chapter of this book was about Ellen and Annemarie having a race. When they do Annemarie got stopped by a guard and questioned. If you read the paragraph before thisone you can make a very logical guess on which this guard was. The guard was a Nazi soldier who was obviously wondering why Annemarie was running. The Nazi soldier was probably just doing his job on his shift and Annemarie just happened to make things interesting. Ellen is very slow and when she finally makes it to the place where Annemarie is at, she also gets questioned. Finally Kirsti who isAnnemarie’s younger sister also makes it and since she was so little she yelled at the guard. The guard finally lets them leave and Kirsti just goes blabbing off about it to mom. Then since Kirsti was hungry mom gave her bread. Kirsti asks when they can have bread with butter and mom says when the soldiers leave. That is what happened in the first chapter.

The second chapter is just ajumbled flash back about Annemarie's sister Lise. It starts with Annemarie telling a story to Kirsti. She starts off describing the princess’s lovey gown and similar things. When she finishes she’s half expecting for Kirsti to murmur and what happened. She stared remembering the time when her sister Lise was alive and so was the king, she and Lise use to wake up every morning to greet the king. Lisehad died already having been run over by a truck but the king hadn’t and was still alive but barely. Papa had once heard a guard ask a boy “and who is that man who rides on his horse every morning?” and the boy responded “why he is the king of Denmark” the guard asks “then where is his bodyguard” and the boy replies” all of Denmark is his bodyguard”. Annemarie always used to ask “but why didn’tthe king of Denmark put us in the fight “and he responded “well the king was a very wise man he knew if the fought many people would die and Denmark is such a small country and Germany is such a big one” then Annemarie would say “but in Norway they fought” and the dad would reply “yes but Norway was such a big city with mountains and everything and they were still defeated”. Mama would always say“there is also more captured cities like Holland, Belgium, France.” “But not Sweden” Annemarie would say. Annemarie love geography and Sweden was blue on the map and it was true Sweden had not yet been defeated (FYI Sweden was never conquered). That is the 2nd chapter.

The third chapter is when the Nazis start “relocating “the Jewish people. Also mentioned in the first paragraph the Jewishwere relocated to concentration camps where they would do all sorts of mean things to them like kill them and torture them. This chapter starts when it is winter and mama notices Kirsti has a missing button. She gives Annemarie a few kroners (kroners were the official currency of Denmark at the time) and tells her to buy Kirsti a new button. After school the go visit the button shop where they...
