La operación de minicargadores: Una realidad que se tiene que aceptar
Skid steer operation: A reality that must be accepted

Primero partamos del hecho que tenemos que aceptar que en nuestros
países de bajo desarrollo económico en Latinoamérica, la existencia de
minicargadores en áreas rurales es casi inexistente. Por lo tanto, la falta
de experiencia de los operadores hispanos en estesector es una realidad
que se mira en muchos de los establos a diario y se refleja en la presencia
de portones y puertas dobladas o quebradas por la falta de práctica,
conocimiento y falta de comunicación entre empleados y encargados.
Cuando contratamos a un operador de este tipo de maquinaria en
nuestras operaciones, tenemos que empezar de cero en el entrenamiento,
incluso si el operador cuentacon la experiencia necesaria para asegurarnos
que la integridad de nuestras instalaciones y nuestros trabajadores se
mantenga intacta.

Safety while operating the machine

Tell the operator that any upward and downward movements of the bucket should be slow and
soft. Prohibit the use of the bucket to transport people within oroutside the dairy.
Discourage operators from wearing loose clothing or jewelry while operating a skid steer. These
items can get caught in the machine and cause accidents.
Also, prohibit the use of cell phones and listening to music with headphones while operating
machinery. The operator’s view and focus should be on the path of the machine and any obstacles.
A common habit on dairies is toleave the seats full of food wrappers and other garbage. Explain
to employees that this can cause obstructions when they try to handle certain mechanisms.

Familiarize the employee with the
machine before he uses it for the first time.
Explain every control function, the desired
operating speeds, how to stop and the
equipment’s operating limitations.
Walk with the employee pointing outhazardous areas as well as entrances and
exits on the farm. Explain how to maneuver
equipment in tight areas and, especially, how
high to raise the bucket.
It is also important to point out areas
where it is safe to drive in reverse, as well
as surrounding factors to watch for when
operating the skid steer (i.e., nearby people
or animals).

Something very important but often forgotten is seat belts.
Should they be optional? No. OSHA considers not using a seat
belt when operating farm machinery a serious violation. Make it
a habit to use this important tool and avoid hefty fines, injuries
or death. Using slow maneuvers, and before entering the pens,
the operator must ensure that all controls are workingperfectly,
especially the braking system.
Teach employees to use the equipment’s steps when entering
the skid steer and not jump into or out of the cab. Once seated, the
employee needss to lower the safety bar and buckle up.

Chequeos diarios

Esta es una práctica muy importante en lecherías donde existe más de un operador.
Antes de empezar su turno el nuevo operador, debe seguir un régimende revisión de la
maquinaria antes de usarla para evitar errores, accidentes y mejorar la comunicación.
Es importante que el empleado reconozca cuando el minicargador necesita ser mantenido
o reparado. En muchas granjas, los operadores manejan maquinaria goteando cualquier tipo de
fluido – no porque al operador no le importe – sino por falta de conocimiento y comunicación
adecuada.Entrenamiento en reconocer esto es de valiosa ayuda.
Pasos básicos incluyen revisar fuga de fluidos, daños, presión de neumáticos, niveles de
combustible, aceite hidráulico y aceite de motor. Es muy importante para los operadores de turnos
nocturnos revisar el funcionamiento adecuado de luces.
