Paul Harding’s blog August 27 Living on $2 a day
It started as a joke really. Last week I was sitting in a café with some friends talking about the economy and how it would be easy t olive on $2 a day for a short time. I told them that inorder to save Money I could get samples of food for free at supermarkets, and use a bicycle rather than take the bus.
My friends were not very supportive and laughed at me. They asked, “What will you eat? Won’t your health suffer? How will you get to work?” Although my friends didn’t think I was serious, I decided to try. But then many questions entered my head. I’m not very fit, so I reallycycle 30km to work and back by bike? What if my bike breaks? I work full-time, so will I find time to look for bargains at the sales? In the end, I decided to give it a try and make a simple rule. After paying for my household bills, for food, entertainment and travel I could spend $2 a day although I couldn’t accept charity from my friends.
After the first day I was tired from cycling to work andhungry because I had only toast for breakfast. Many times I asked myself, how am I going to do this? I stopped off at the supermarket on the way home and spent the day’s $2 on old black bananas, out-of-date bread and other discounted foods.
I couldn’t waste any Money on expensive food. But despite this I had only spent $1.79. My first day was a success.
The next day was much harder. I felt tiredfrom all the cycling and the smell of the market and cafes on my way to work made me much hungrier. I also had a date with my girlfriend and I wondered how I was going to feed her with only $2 for the two of us. In the end she understood, although I cooked a cheap meal with rice and beans. After dinner, she asked me to go out for a coffee but I had to refuse, so she went home early. The rest o theweek was hard. I started dreaming about the big meal I was going to have when it was over, but gradually I got used to eating economically.
By the end of the week I had spent $13.87 and in spite of only eating cheap foods, I ate quite well, it seems the bike riding helped with my fitness as well. And I hadn’t wasted Money. But the biggest thing I learned this week was the priceless lesson thatanti-consumerism was not only good for the planet, but good for my soul.
¿Cómo vas a ir a trabajar? "Aunque mis amigos no creo que iba en serio, me decidí a probarlo. Pero entonces muchas preguntas entraron en mi cabeza. No estoy muy en forma, así que realmente ciclo...
