Essay #1
“The value of fantasy and imagination”

While we get older, we realize that we have been losing one part of us, and we become slaves of our fears and chains; indeed, it becomes more difficult for us to imagine, to have fantasy, because we are loosing the most precious gift, the freedom of our innocence. Astime goes by, we are not taking care of our minds, and our souls, we do not find the time for us, and we are taking apart our imagination and fantasy.

First of all, we need to know what is imagination, fantasy and innocence, and what can we do with this qualities, where these qualities can take us, and whats the positive effect of this qualities in our lives.

According to the Oxforddictionary, imagination is “the faculty of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses”. We could say that imagination is a powerful human ability to create ideas, ideas impact in our minds to believe in something, and also to reach a goal. Do we remember when we were little kids, our minds where full imagination, for example, we believed in Santa Claus, andthat idea of santa claus was present in our minds; indeed, we really believed in him, we did not see him, but we trusted that he existed, and we were waiting with anxiety Christmas time. Also we tried to be better kids during the year in order to get better presents; how one thing could change our lives, how a little imagination could create a huge impact in our behavior. In fact, how canimagination could help us in our lives?. Well it is simple: if you imagine that you are a successful person, therefore you will believe that you really are successful, and you will try to do your best in order to really become a successful person. When you create in your mind the fact that you could have a successful life, it is when you start crating fantasies in your mind.

As we approached tofantasy, I would like to define fantasy. According to the Oxford dictionary fantasy is: “the faculty or activity of imagining things, specially things that are impossible or improbable”. If fantasy its the imagination of things, especially the impossible ones, why are we going to spend our time with a lot of fantasies in our minds, if that are impossible ideas?. Well, it is also a human ability, which Ithink it is not bad, because, a lot of human fantasies became true, for example the idea of going to other plants, or going to the moon, well it is not a fantasy anymore, therefore it is not a waste of time. I strongly believe that fantasy and imagination are together. I also think that the fantasies you have, are a result of your past, of what were your experiences in the past.

In the otherhand, we need to emphasize innocence, What is innocence?. In this case, I refer to the innocence of children, so I could define that innocence as the stage of our lives when we were not afraid of anything, when we trusted in everyone, that stage when we did not take care of what happened yesterday and what will happen tomorrow, that time in our lives when we found time to watch the stars at night.Jesus Christ teaches us in Matthew 18:3, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven”.

Could we remember when we were innocent and imaginative kids? With out doubt we were completely free, and we were not afraid of anything, for our freedom was our most valuable possession, I do not remember my self being stressed outduring my childhood.

What happened when we lose our innocence?. Basically we begin to lose our ability to trust in others, we lose our freedom, therefore I want to take an excerpt from the essay of Le Guin, “Why are Americans Afraid of Dragons?, on page 44 the last phrase of the third paragraph, “they are afraid of dragons because they are afraid of freedom”.

In this excerpt I found a...
