Because he is in New York for a legitimate purpose, to see a friend from before his days as a criminal, Bob does not thinkabout the fact that he is wanted by the police. He chats openly with the policeman, unaware that his picture has been forwarded from Chicago and that the policeman has seen it. While his innocence makeshim miss some details, his criminal past also blinds him to the realities of the situation. He knows that he looks suspicious standing in a darkened doorway on a deserted street, and so he is not atall surprised that a policeman would approach him. Looking at the situation from a criminal point of view, he is conscious of looking like a law breaker, which makes Bob blind to the idea that theperson who approaches him at ten o'clock on the appointed night at the appointed place might be the person whom he is scheduled to meet.
Throughout the story, Bob never explains what he has done out Westto earn his fortune, only that life out there has given him everything he ever wanted.
