ROSA PARK’S
Rosa Louise McCailey (February 4, 1913 - October 24, 2005) was an important figure of the Civil Rights Movement in America, mainlyfor refusing to give up her seat to a white man and moveto the back of the bus (1955) in the southern United States. The action ended with his imprisonment and is frequently cited as the spark of the CivilRights Movement in America. It is called the firstlady of civil rights in America.
In 1950, Parks joined the civil rights movement and was employed as a secretary, a branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NationalAssociation for the Advancement of Colored People), the NAACP in Montgomery (Alabama).
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Parks refused to obey a public bus driver, who wanted to force her torelinquish her seat to a white person. She was imprisoned for his conduct, accused of having disturbed the order.
In response to the jailing of Rosa, Martin Luther King, a Baptist minister at that timerelatively unknown, led the protest to public buses in Montgomery, which also helped activist and childhood friend of Rosa Parks Johnnie Carr, which became necessary for the public transport authority toend the practice of racial segregation on buses. This event began more protests against the people and so did segregation.
Meanwhile, in 1956, the Parks case finally reached the Supreme Court of theUnited States (the peak of the U.S. judiciary) which declared that segregation in transportation was against the U.S. Constitution.
Parks became an icon of the civil rights movement. He moved to Detroit(Michigan) in the early 1960's where he got employment of African-American representative John Conyers (D-Michigan) from 1965 to 1988.
In 1994, Rosa Parks, 82, was attacked in her Detroit home byJoseph Skipper. Skipper stole a total of 53 U.S. dollars. Upon findingthe house demanded money, to Rosa responded by offering $ 3, and after she gave more demanding another $ 50. The incident caused...
