HOTEL RWANDA:
• Conflict description:
The Rwandan Genocide occurred in mid-July 1994 and was a massive murder of an estimated 800,000 people in Rwanda (Eastern Africa nation).
Theconflict was between Tutsis, who had controlled power for centuries, and Hutus, a minority who came to power in the rebellion of 1959-62.
In 1990 a Tutsi rebel group tried to defeat Hutu’s power.Hutus the thought that the Tutsi intended to make all Hutus slaves and must be resisted at all costs.
Habyarimana’s murder (Hutu, president of Rwanda) in April 1994 set off a violent reaction, whichended in Hutu groups conducting mass-killings of Tutsis and also pro-peace Hutus who were considered “traitors”.
While the killings were taking place, the French and the U.S. government didn’t makeany effort to help the Rwandans, they only helped the white people.
• Origin and differentiation of Ethnic groups:
Hutu: Central African people, living mainly in Rwanda, Burundi, andeastern DR Congo. They constitute the 84% of Rwandans.
The differentiations between Hutus and Tutsis are mainly based on social class more than on ethnicity, as there are no significantlinguistic(Tutsi and Hutu speak the same Bantu language), physical, or cultural differences between them. It is commonly believed that the Hutu arrived to Chad during the 11th century and dominated the area untilthe arrival of the Tutsi.
• Tutsi: Ethnic group in Central Africa. They are the second largest caste in Rwanda and Burundi. European colonists defined "Tutsi" as anyone owning more than tencows (a sign of wealth) or with the physical feature of a longer nose, or longer neck, commonly associated with the Tutsi. The Europeans noticed that some Rwandans had noses they thought characteristicof their people, so they created historical and racial theories to explain why some Africans inherited such features.
