Course description
Designed specifically for students intending to proceed to a career in biological research and development in universities and government, or private commercial research institutions, this course allows students to gain experience in leading-edge scientific research, working as a member of a research team, as a portion of eachyear's laboratory component is undertaken within active research laboratories under the supervision of a staff research group.
Other key features include limited places, a project-management environment, provision of postgraduate mentors, a seminar program presented by international researchers, and the development of research-based communication and presentation skills.
Students also haveaccess to the Faculty Industry Cadetship Program and mentoring programs.
Course structure
First-year studies include organisation and function of cells, animal diversity, ecology and behaviour, genetics, human biology and evolution, plant science, chemistry, and 45 credit points of electives.

Additional costs (AUD)
Students will need to buy a laboratory coat ( approximately A$30) and dissecting kit -(approximately A$40). These may be purchased from any supplier and become students'personal property. Additional costs for field trips (for food, accommodation, travel) may also apply.
Middle Band
Successful completion of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematical Methods (either), Specialist Mathematics, or Physics facilitates an additional 1.5 aggregate points per study, to a maximum of 3 points. Performance in prerequisite studies is also considered.

Additional information
Students performing well in the Bachelor of Biological Sciences (normally achieving an average of 80% or more in a year) are eligible to transfer to the Advanced Science degree.
