The Sarmiento’s House was built in 1801 by Doña Paula Albarracin. When she arrived to San Juan she was single and poor, so she installed a telar, with appliance shegot pay to the employers.
This house is situated in Libertador Avenue and Sarmiento Street. During the ancient that streets “La Quinta” (Sarmiento Street) and “La Rioja” (LibertadorAvenue).
The materials were land and adobe. At the beginning the floor was made with land, the walls were built adobe (mud) and tapias; the roof was made with mud, cañas; nowadays this roofstill maintain thanks when the house was built, it was put on two “rollizos de Alamos”
The house has survived during the four big earthquakes, but during the 1944 earthquake the north partsuffered big damages, so it had to be destroyed; and that part was re-built.
The house has got eleven rooms. But nowadays we can see eight rooms, exist three rooms that any reason wecan’t see.
All the furniture belonged to Sarmiento’s family. The pictures that exist in the house were painted by Procesa Sarmiento, who was the Sarmiento’s sister; she is considered the firstpainter in San Juan and the first woman artist of all XIX century.
There are six windows. One window at the south part of the house is a cupboard.
Talking about the kitchen, we can saythat important saucepans are the PAILA, the “mortero” and “the pava”.
The garden is very little, it is called “La Huerta de Doña Paula” it was built with idea of being had a family placewith plants, It was mixed with flowers because they wanted to confuse animals and in that way, protect plants.
The new technology used in house is cameras, columns, and digital room.
TheSarmiento’s house was declared a monument because Sarmiento was a really important person for our country, he was who said that education have to be public, he is EL MAESTRO DE AMERICA!
