Syphilis is an infection caused by bacterium Treponema pallidumsubespecies pallidum. The syphilis is considered a STD (sexual transmitted infection) but is not the only way of get this disease; it may be transmitted from mother tofetus during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital syphilis.

Syphilis is believed to have infected 12 million people worldwide and had been present in the humanhistory. Much famous people in history have suffered this disease, including had been subject of thesis of the peruvian historian J.C. Tello, “The antiquity of syphilis inPeru”. Nowadays the syphilis is related with the under socioeconomic stratum and rates of infection have increased often in combination with HIV. This has been attributedpartly to unsafe sexual practices among men who have sex with men, increased promiscuity, prostitution and decreasing use of barrier protection.

The signs and symptoms ofsyphilis vary according in which of the three stages it presents. The first stage presents with a “soft” chancre, which is painless skin ulceration. The second stage orsecondary syphilis develops during the untreated first one, and is in this moment where the patient feel over well, furthermore in all of body appear rash which frequentlyinvolves the palms and soles. Between the second stage and the last one, the phase is called latent syphilis with little to no symptoms, and finally the tertiary syphilis withgummas, neurological or cardiac symptoms.

Diagnosis is usually via blood tests and the treatment with antibiotics can be effectively, specifically the penicillin.
