Left Out in the Cold: A Case Study in Thermoregulation

* PART I

1. What mechanisms of heat loss are contributing to Joel’s feelings of coldness?
Controlling heat loss is done largely by theconstriction of cutaneous blood vessels. This reduces blood flow and, therefore, the amount of heat lost by the skin loss that occurs by radiation, convection and conduction and which significantlyincreases the wind and moisture.

2. What two physiologic responses will occur to help Joel maintain a normal body temperature?
Some of the symptoms of hypothermia include confusion, drowsiness andweakness and loss of coordination Joel not help keep your body temperature normal.

3. What mechanisms and/or structures are responsible for initiating and controlling these physiologic responses?As body temperature drops, the Joel’s body is reduced by half for every 10 ° C drop. The first manifestations occur in the central nervous system which decreases cerebral blood flow by 6% for eachdegree Celsius decrease.

* PART II

4. What physiologic response would cause Joel to feel there was little blood flowing to his hands and feet? How does this physiologic response limit heat lossto the environment?
And to the hands and feet it’s because the distribution of blood virtually stops during cold stress vasoconstriction to predominate. When you want to lose heat increases bloodflow to the extremities and occur a phenomenon of maximal vasodilation, increasing cardiac output 30%.

5. Why is Joel shivering so strongly? How does this help to prevent a drop in normal bodytemperature?
The body naturally reacts and in the body increase muscle tone, resulting chills, with a concomitant increase up to five times in the production of heat. However, chills also increase the rateof heat loss.

*PART III

6. If Joel had not been rescued, what two types of cold injury was he at risk of developing? What are signs and symptoms associated with these conditions? , body...
