THE DEPRESSION AND THE RISE OF THE NAZIS
* Economic Collapse in Germany.
* Businesses went bankrupt.
* Workers were laid off and unemployment rocketed.
RESULT
Germany was badly affected because: as American bankers and businessmen lost huge amounts of money in the crash, to pay off their debts they asked Germans banks to repay the money they had borrowed to her.
The Americanstock market crashed and sent the USA into a Disastrous Economic Depression

Although all Europe was affected, Germany was the most affected because she had been so dependent on American loans and because she still had to pay reparations to the allies.
Now, Hitler`s ideas now had special relevance: The Nazis twenty five points were very attractive to those who were more vulnerableto the depression: the unemployed, the elderly and the middle classes. He blames the Jews and the allies of being responsible for those problems.

* Methods were modern and effective.
* They relied on generalized slogans.
* They talked about uniting the people of Germany behind one leader.
* They also talked about going back to traditional values.
* The Nazis repeated inevery opportunity that they believed that Jews, communists, Weimar politicians and the Treaty of Versailles were the causes of Germany`s problems.
* They said that the Weimar Republic was unable to solve the problems.
* Their posters were everywhere.
* The SA and the SS gave the people the impression of discipline and order. That`s what the country needed.
* Hitler was a powerfulspeaker

Negative cohesion : this means that some people supported Hitler not because they shared Nazi`s views but because they shared Nazi fears and dislikes.

Some problems Germany was facing
* DISILLUSIONMENT WITH DEMOCRACY: one negative factor of the democracy was that after the depression politicians seemed unable to solve the problems. The president cut off thegovernment spending and welfare benefits. In 1930 the president called elections, this was a terrible decision because they gave the Nazi`s the opportunity to gain power.
* THE COMMUNIST THREAT: as the crisis deepened, communist support was rising too. The Nazis turned this to their advantage. The owner of the big industries feared the communists because of their plan to introduce the statecontrol of business. The industrialists were also concerned about the growing strength of Germany`s trade unions. They felt the Nazis would combat these communists’ threats.
* DECADENCE: the Nazis believed that the traditional German values were been threatened. The Nazis talked about restoring the old values.
Hitler demanded the post of chancellor from the president two times but, as thepresident was suspicious of Hitler, he refused both times. Both times, the chancellor assigned by the president had to resign as they do not have the support in the parliament.

He became Chancellor not because of the will of the German people but though a behind-the-scene deal.
He would have to get support of the parliament and to control de communists
In January, the presidentgave Hitler the post of chancellor. The president was confident that they would control Hitler`s influence.
As a result
The president realized that to rescue the Democratic Party they needed a chancellor who had support in the parliament.

HOW DID HITLER DEAL WITH OPPOSITION??
He introduced a totalitarian regime in which there cannot be rival parties or political debate

Hitler decided to send SS troops to break into the homes of Rohm and other leaders of the SA and arrested them. Over the weekend 400 other were executed
The leading officers were suspicious of Hitler`s SA and its leader Rohm. The SA was a badly disciplined force. In addition, hitler was suspicious of Rohm
