Legend of “La Mulata de Cordoba”
The Mulata of Cordoba was a very beautiful woman who lived in Cordoba, a town not far from Vera Cruz. No one knew who her parents were, or where she camefrom. So she was called “La Mulata de Cordoba”.
Years passed and she never grew old. Because she was very beautiful every men was mad about her. She led a very good life, helpingeveryone who was in trouble, and giving food to the hungry ones. She wore poor clothes but she was always neat and clean.
She was a very wicked witch and on the same day, at the same hour,people could see her in different places. Also, people said that she could fly at nights on the roofs of the houses, with sparks flashing from her black eyes.
One day the Mulata was put inprison by the Holy Office. Some said that a disdained lover denounced her to the Inquisition.
Many years went by when one morning, the city was astonished by hearing that the witch escapedfrom the prison of the inquisition and was free!
The next describes what really happened: When the chief inquisitor went into the prison of the Mulata, there was on the wall a drawing of abig ship. While he was looking at the ship the Mulata asked him “Holy Father, what does this ship need to make it perfect?"
And to that he answered: "It is completely perfect that itneeds only to sail”. Then said the Mulata: "It is going to sail and very far!" and there was on her face a very wicked smile. With astonishment he looked at her, and at the ship. "How can thatbe possible?- he asked.- “In this manner !” -she answered and, as she spoke, she leaped from the floor to the deck of the ship, up there on the wall.
The ship sailed right on into andthrough the solid stone and disappeared. Only a little echoing sound of that wicked laughter was heard in the chamber, the ship had vanished, and the Mulata was out of her prison and she had gone!
