To build a bridge over the straits of Messina has been a subject of dispute for some time. The idea to erect it was originated from along time before the second world war, but, still today, work has not been started. The issue of the bridge over the straits involves the whole Italian people, from politicians to common people, andfrom contractors to the Mafia, as well as the natural habitat and the south’s Italy image change in the future.
At this point, this essay has the aim to analyse arguments for and against thisarchitectural work. Firstly, according to this idea, the bridge would join Sicily to the rest of Italy definitively. In fact, the union between the two lands through a bridge, would reduce the long time ittakes to get from Villa San Giovanni to Messina. However, if on one hand things would be easier with regards the time, on the other, this service will have cost more than the same journey by ferry.Secondly, thanks to this construction, the problem of the weather would be definitively solved. In other words, it would be possible to travel in a bad weather conditions as well. In fact, nowadays, itis impossible to embark in conditions of rough or heavy seas. With regard to this aspect, sea transport may be affected by discomfort. This would be solvable if the bridge was constructed. Anyway, thebridge would serve to ensure the exporting of Sicily’s typical foodstuffs such as oranges, mandarins, pistachios etc.
Thirdly, everyone could use the bridge twenty-four hours a day and three hundredsixty- five days a years. The position in favour of building the bridge over the straits of Messina, goes on to argue that there would be an increase in tourists who would came to visit the enormousstructure, the greatest in the world. As a consequence, there would be an increase in economic activity and, at the same time, Sicily’s typical products would be discovered.
