Tobacco Control state policies in India

Smokefree: India has a national ban on smoking in indoor workplaces and public places. Hotels, restaurants and bars with a capacity of more than 30 peopleare allowed to have smoking areas, levels of implementation and enforcement vary by state and city.

Advertising, promotion and sponsorship: India bans the promotion of snuff, sponsorship and mostforms of advertising. Snuff companies are still able to advertise through the point of sale.

Warning labels: The current health warnings are graphic but the images are weak and do not communicate thedangers of using snuff. Warnings cover 40 percent of one side of the container. In March 2010 the government passed a new pictorial warning label.

Taxes on Tobacco: Tobacco products in India arecheap. Bidis, in particular, are poorly recorded and are available at a very low cost, taxes on snuff in India are below the rate recommended by the World Bank (from 65 to 80 percent of the purchaseprice) that commonly occur in countries with effective tobacco control policies snuff.

Sales to Minor: Prohibition of sales to minors under 18 years.

REASONS TO PROHIBIT THE ADVERTISING OFTOBACCO

Health consequences:

About 1 million Indians die from diseases related to snuff each year in India.
Among young people (13-15 years), 27 percent are exposed to snuff smoke at home and 40percent are exposed to secondhand smoke in public places snuff.
