The pietà is a renaissance master-piece sculpture created by Michelangelo Buonarroti created from 1498-1499. Michelangelo was born the 6th of March 1475 at Caprese, in Tuskany and he died the 18th ofFebruary 1564. He was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, artist, architect, poet, and engineer. When he was 25 years old, he created, the Pietà. A pilgrim remark said that it had been made by anotherartist called Christoforo Solari, when it was placed into the San Peter´s Basilica. Michelangelo was so angry that he took a hammer and put his name on this majestic sculpture. After many years ofgreat success in painting, he was asked to paint many things for the Sistine chapel. Two of most of his greatest works were made there, the last judgment, and the creation of Adan, which were located inthe roof. Michelangelo Buonarroti died the 18th of February 1564 after a slow fever, he was considered the greatest living artist in lifetime, and even he was considered to be one of the most importantsculptors of history. The Pietà is located in the St Peters Basilica in the Vatican City. It is built in Carrara Marble which is a materialused mostly in sculptures. This famous work of art which its dimensions are 174cm * 195cm represents the body of Jesus, in the arms of his mother Mary, after the crucifixion. The sculpture ispyramidal, and the figures are out of proportion, the marcs of Jesus after the crucifixion are small, and Mary looks like a beautiful young woman, not as a 50 year old woman that is the age she had when Jesusdied. The pietà is considered to be one of the greatest sculptures ever, because of its difficulty, and because Michelangelo was only 25 when he constructed it. In 1972, a geologist which was mentallydisturbed called Laszlo Toth, visited it, and with a hammer started destructing it saying “I am Jesus Christ”.
