The Caterpillar D6R Series II crawler tractor was introduced in 2001 in France as the replacement for the D6R. Production began in USA in 2002 and in Japan and Brazil in 2003.

TheD6R has a Cat C9 engine with a three speeds forward, three reverse powershift transmission. It comes standard with an advanced modular cooling system (AMOCS) radiator and torque divider. Thehorsepower of the tractor varies, depending on the unit.

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 74 inches (188 cm), the same as its predecessor;the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has an 88-inch (224-cm) track gauge. However, the standard configuration is available with two different lengths of track: the standard length is 8.6 feet(2.6 m); the XL (extra length) and XW (extra width) length is 9.3 feet (2.8 m). Both standard and LGP configurations are available with either fingertip control or differential steering.
The standardand XL tractor units have 22-inch (56-cm) shoe width, the XW has a 30-inch (76-cm) shoe width, and the LGP has a 36-inch (91-cm) shoe width.
The D6R II is also offered with different combinations ofdozer blade types: straight (S), angle (A), semi-U (SU), or power angle tilt (PAT).
Standard configuration tractors with differential steering and 185 flywheel horsepower (FWHP) were manufactured inthe USA, with an AFM serial number prefix; in Japan, with a BNL prefix; in France, with a BLT prefix; and in Brazil, with a BPM prefix. These tractors have SU, A, and PAT dozer blades.
