¿What is a Crisis?
“It is a temporary state of upset and disorganization, characterized chiefly by an individual’s inability to cope with particular situations using customary methods of problemsolving, and by the potential for a radically positive or negative outcome”. (Slaikeu, 1984)
There are three variables that influence in the ending of a crisis:
- The severity of theprecipitating event.
- The personal resources
- The social resources present at the moment of crisis.
With regard to events, some are devastating in themselves, so it almost gives place to a crisis, forexample the death or loss of a loved one, a violation, and disasters such as fires, floods, etc. There are other events that in themselves do not cause crisis, but depending on what they represent foreach person, in that moment of his life are presented and therefore the meaning they have for her, may precipitate a crisis, for example the birth of a child, retirement, professional examination, etc.Novak (1978), says that the impact of an event depends of the time, duration, intensity and how it interferes with other events of the own development of the person.
The Personal Resources areinnate characteristics as the temperament, or acquired over the course of life through experiences, degree of knowledge, growth and maturity, degree of contact with oneself: such as recognition ofemotions, feelings, thoughts, etc. positive attitude, optimism, sense of life, values and resolutions of previous crisis.
The Social Resources relate to who are present at the moment of the event andhow they react, how they assist the person, if they know how to take part, and it can go from medical assistance, counseling, and emotional help.
