smPERTINENT TRENDS
Global Growth. The global supply of students is projected to grow to at least 250 million seats by the year 2025—a 150 percent increase from 2000. Global student mobility willalso grow substantially, projected to more than double by 2025 to well over 7 million students annually, and perhaps substantially more. The vast majority of growth will occur outside North America andEurope.
Global Competition. A recently released study by NUFFIC (the Netherlands organization for international cooperation in higher education) concludes that the number of countries actively engagedin recruiting inbound students has grown considerably as a means to improve the quality of their own systems (e.g., China, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Brazil). Growth inintraregional mobility is a major trend cited, as is mobility integrated into structured cross-border partnerships (e.g., dual degrees and research collaborations). Global competition for students willintensify. A recent U.S. National Science Board studyii notes rapid global spread in research capacity and quality, and this increases competition for the best in graduate students and scholars.
U.S.Market Share and Numbers. The U.S. percentage of the total market share of global mobility is almost certain to decrease. However, the U.S. remains a highly attractive destination and the raw numbers ofincoming students will likely continue to increase, barring catastrophic events or policies of the U.S. or sending countries. Even following the disruptions post September 11 and a downturn of 22,556students enrolling in U.S. institutions, recovery was relatively quick and by 2010 had achieved a record level—723,277. Still, only about 3.5 percent of U.S. campus enrollments are internationalstudents (compared to about 17 percent in the United Kingdom and about 22 percent in Australia). If Australia and the United Kingdom are viewed in comparison, there is probably some room to grow...
