The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is the partof the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This was adopted on December 15, 1791.
The Supreme Court of the United States first ruled in 2008that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess and carry firearms.

There are several versions of the text of the Second Amendment, each with slight capitalization and punctuationdifferences, found in the official documents surrounding the adoption of the Bill of Rights. 
One version was passed by the Congress, while another is found in the copies distributed to the States.* Passed by the Congress:
[A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.]
* The States andauthenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
[A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not beinfringed.]
The original hand-written copy of the Bill of Rights, approved by the House and Senate, was prepared by William Lambert and resides in the National Archives.
The Second Amendment is the onlyamendment to the Constitution which states a purpose.

The Supreme Court has now definitively held that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected withservice in a militia, and to use that weapon for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
Moreover, this right applies not just to the federal government, but to states andmunicipalities as well.
