Vaquita

The vaquita or Gulf of California porpoise is the smallest cetacean that exists in the world and the only Mexican porpoise. Premium dolphins, though more robust, has a dorsal fin and two pectoralfins. It is light gray eyes lined with metal around very dark gray, like the mouth it has a very thick outline color.
This species has the characteristic of being endemic, meaning that thedistribution of their natural habitat is restricted only in the Upper Gulf of California. Can produce only one pup every one to two years, is the smallest porpoise is known (1.5 m in length and an averageweight of 36 kg), feeds mainly on fish and squid, has large fins in proportion to the size body, the dorsal fin is high, showing black spots on the skin around the eyes and lips.
The vaquita is 100%Mexican species as only distributed in the Gulf of California and are mostly seen in the north of these waters, off the coast of San Felipe, Baja California and Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. Unfortunately,these animals are listed as "Endangered" since it is estimated that the number of individuals has declined dramatically in the last two decades, now estimated at about 567 copies. This, mainly becauseof bycatch since the cows get stuck in fishing nets and drown trapped in them or even water are extracted along with the rest of the trapped animals.
For over 20 years, the Mexican government hasworked closely with NGOs and civil society to protect the vaquita. As part of these efforts, it is important to mention that in 2008, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas of the Ministryof Environment and Natural Resources issued the Programme of Action for the Conservation of Species (PACE): Vaquita. This includes the proper enforcement of fishing regulations in the region,environmental education and the promotion of productive reconversion (in this case to promote behavioral change fishery development of other productive activities on land) , among many other actions.
