1. CHARACTERISTICS.
1. All modals except for ought are followed by the base form ofa verb. Ought is followed by a to-infinitive.

2. Modals have only one form. There is no –s form for the 3rd personsingular of the present tense, no -ing and -ed forms.

2. USES.

OBLIGATION. MUST, HAVE TO, MUSTN’T, NEEDN’T

Children have to go to school until they aresixteen.
Have to and must are sometimes interchangeable. “Have to” is used more often than “must.”
Mustn’t ( indicates negative obligation, that is to say, prohibition.
You mustn’t steal otherpeople’s things.
Don’t have to ( indicates absence of obligation.
He’s rich and he doesn’t have to go to work.
Needn’t ( indicates that something is not necessary, i.e. lack of obligation. Ingeneral statements we prefer “don’t have to.”
It isn’t cold. You needn’t wear a coat.
