When you reach Florence by train you will get a truly unique experience, like landing on a completely differentplanet. Churches, narrow streets and palaces date back to ancient times and are magnificently preserved offering an incredible array of masterpieces and monuments that are the ultimate expression of atradition that has adapted perfectly well to our modern times.
It is precisely this combination that makes Florence unique and fascinating: this is an art city and the cradle of the Renaissance, thehomeland of Dante, the Signoria of Cosimo and Lorenzo de' Medici and the modern and functional city of international congresses and fashion fairs famous the world over.
The train goes all the wayto the historic center up to Santa Maria Novella, the station of Florence that takes its name from one of the city's most famous religious landmarks. Santa Maria Novella is just a few steps away fromthe station, with its white and green marble facade which was designed by Alberti, the great Renaissance architect and is a perfect balance of form and volume. Inside you will find anothermasterpiece of Florentine Renaissance: the fresco of the Trinity by Masaccio.
A little further away from the station, at only 300 meters, you will find on one side Borgo San Lorenzo, a Medici district whereyou will find the tombs of the family in the New Sacristy of the Basilica di San Lorenzo, a priceless masterpiece by Michelangelo Buonarroti.
On the other side, at 500 meters, you will find BorgoOgnissanti which at one time constituted the medieval heart of Florence. Later on, in the 19th century, it was revamped by the Grand dukes of Lorena and nowadays is considered one of the more beautifulneighborhoods of Florence
In the ancient refectory of the Convento di Ognissanti you will find another milestone of 15th century painting: the very beautiful Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio.
