1.American Federation of Labor
The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was one of the first federations of labor unions in the United States. It was founded inColumbus, Ohio in December 1886 by an alliance of craft unions disaffected from the Knights of Labor, a national labor association.
2.Bessemer Process
The Bessemer process was the first inexpensiveindustrial process for the mass-production of steel from molten pig iron, is named after its inventor, Henry Bessemer, who took out a patent on the process in 1855. The process was independentlydiscovered in 1851 by William Kelly.
3.Child Labor
Forms of child labor, including indentured servitude and child slavery, have existed throughout American history. As industrialization moved workersfrom farms and home workshops into urban areas and factory work, children were often preferred, because factory owners viewed them as more manageable, cheaper, and less likely to strike.
4.ChineseExclusion Act
The Chinese Exclusion Act was a United States federal law signed by Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882, following revisions made in 1880 to the Burlingame Treaty of 1868. Those revisionsallowed the U.S. to suspend Chinese immigration, a ban that was intended to last 10 years.

The Haymarket Riot in Chicago in May 1886 killed several people, and resulted in a highlycontroversial trial followed by executions of four men who may have been innocent. The American labor movement was dealt a severe setback, and the chaotic events resonated for many years.
