Was It Necessary to Drop the Atomic Bomb to End World War II?
The Second World War was from 1939-1945 and involved several nations’ mainly super powers with millions of military personnel involving millions of shillings and brainwork from the scientists to comeup with such items as atomic weapons (Ward, 2007). This was marked with rampant massive deaths of civilians and militants. It began by invasions in North of Europe and later spread to the whole continent and was marked with the importation of militants from their colonies. The fighting parties were labeled Axis which involved the Germans and Allied forces for the British and common wealth countriesand the Soviet Union. In Europe, it ended with the seize of Berlin; Germany’s capital by the Allied forces; seemingly so it still brought about the cold war years after. In Asia however, there was an issues with the Japanese people who all fought to the last man old or young male or female all in allegiance of their Emperor marked with strong resistance at Okinawa and on the main Islands whichwas the cause of more than a quarter deaths of the American troops. It all came to an end after the atomic bombing of the two most populated cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Bernstein, 1976).
The war had been going on for some time and by the time it had came to an end, Japan had already got to appoint that it had no option but to just surrender but the Allied forces led by America could nottake that to chance of their decline to do so. At that time the American President was Harry S. Truman who gave authorization to have the bomb dropped and to do this he needed advice from his adviser and top army personnel to come to the decision that would see the destruction of an 18km perimeter and cause psychological pain many years after (Paulin, 2007). The U.S army had sent a five dayultimatum before the 6th August 1945 bombing. The Japanese Emperor through his army that had already seen a loss of many assembled people in readiness for war instead of having them evacuated, mass suicides were also a common feature instead of persons seeing themselves surrender. This was becoming too much and the U.S had to take action to save lives on both sides.
Their step may however beseen to have been too drastic, unethical, criminal and to an extent even morally wrong, to date the army commandant has been quoted saying that “Japan deserved to be hit by that awful thing”. The debate of the necessity of the bombs is still a debate years after amongst various scholars and it also saw the establishment of the United Nations whose principle aim is to ensure that there is not arecurrence of such a war and more proper use of atomic energy rather than on destruction of lives (Bernstein, 1976).
Those for the bombing had the line of thought that lack of it would just increase loss of lives in their hundreds of thousands of mostly civilians who would fight with inferior weapons. The operation was more of just as the conflicting parties had all come to a deadlock and withalready being tired if the war due to loss of personnel. Top engineer of the bomb said that “if the bomb hadn’t been used more deaths and destruction would have been in a wider scale” (Paulin, 2007). In any case it was the only way to bring the Japan to its knees as there was no other way of doing so. The options present were: increased bombing of Japan cities, waiting for an Allied forces attackagainst Japan, time and permit for the Emperor to maintain his thrown, actual attack by the U.S on Japan. The government did not care about its citizenry as the deaths of its people were not enough to make them want to quit the war justifiably.
The supporters also claim that the bomb had cost too much well over $2 Billion to have it go to waste unused. This had taken a lot of time and skill...
