1. Read the “Renaissance society” from your book and make a pyramid that
Illustrates the division of society. Below your pyramid, write an
Explanation of the characteristics of each social group.

The nobility: The city was ruled by a small group with common interests and family ties, although there were also clashes among them. They controlled the institutions and alternated in theirgovernment, besides owning the most land and property and controlling the economic resources. This group of urban patricians, characteristic of Late Medieval and Modern Age cities, was formed by the ciutadans honrats .Tortosa, being a city that depended on the king, did not have its own nobility, with marquises or counts, but these were the people who directed the local life, often attaining theprivileges of nobility and being made knights or ladies.

The middle class: The Renaissance was marked by the emergence of a thriving middle class of craftsmen, who produced goods and commodities, and trader-merchants, who purchased, transported, distributed, and resold the goods for profit wherever demand was high. As these merchants became successful, they spent money on additional goods andservices, thereby increasing the wealth of other.

Peasants: Peasants were usually completely uneducated, stripping away from them one of the key factors in social mobility. Artisans would be educated through an apprenticeship or at home, although it was possible for a boy to attend a cathedral school to become a member of the clergy.
The harshness of family life greatly affected children. Childrenespecially were susceptible to disease and death, in a peasant family, those children who survived childhood were extremely lucky. A young peasant mother may be lucky to end up with one grown child after years of child- birth. In addition, mothers and fathers often died by the time they reached thirty, leaving children without one or both parents. Babies whose parents could not afford to keepthem and babies who were born to slave mothers in wealthy houses might be left at orphanages.
In modest European homes, meat was not necessarily served every day . Bread was the fundamental staple for the lower and middle classes, was made with cheaper grains than wheat: barley and rye, for example. Meals for the lower social classes usually consisted of dark bread such as rye or barley, and cheeseor curds.

2. Read chapter XIV and XV (pp. 67-73) The Prince and write a brief essay
Explaining whether or not you agree with Machiavelli’s theory of politics.
Minimum 15 lines

I’m not agree with Machiavelli´s theory because I think that what a prince most be focus on its on his kingdom and the people that live in it, to be peaceful and not causing war at all, because that could harmhis kingdom. A prince most be more focus on art like painting, sculptures, architecture, etc. Than in killing others kingdoms. I´m agree that a prince as a ruler need to know about war and need good soldiers and strategies to protect and also to attack, but I don’t think is right that the war was considered the most important knowledge of all. And spend most of the time studying and preparing toattack like if it was an art. I think that the author gives good supporting ideas about his theory because he gives a lot of examples of people successful rulers because they were experts on the art of war, and try to convince you that he is right, but in the other hand I think there are also some examples of people who didn’t believe in war and they were successful rules too, one of the bestexamples is “Gandhi” who even though he wasn’t a prince or a king he was one of the most important leaders on India and he made a peaceful revolution. So in conclusion the war it´s important to know but not the most important on a Princes Politics.
