Shakespeare’s Contributionsto the English Literature

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer in English language. He was the most influential writer inEnglish literature because he enriched the Elizabethan period by introducing new words, phrases, blank verse and new poetic and grammatical structures, those changes in written and oral language stilllast up to our days. In the following essay I have analyzed some changes that Shakespeare introduced during Elizabethan period.

In the course of Elizabeth I’S reign a change tookplace in people’s attitudes to the language. The earlier view was that English was rude and ineloquent language. By the end of the century (1550-1650) English was a rich and eloquent language because thatEnglish vocabulary was expanded thanks to the borrowings and coins of words from Greek, Latin and French. Words borrowed from Greek and Latin were thought to be particularly expressive. The languagewas adorned with the devices of classical rhetoric which was a major subject in the Elizabethan grammar schools.

Many words were created by various methods of word-formation that were borrowed fromother languages:

1) The coining of words means of living prefixes and suffixes, for example the adjective “Comfortable” turned into “Uncomfortable” by introducing the negative prefix “on”.2) Affixation through prefixes and suffixes:

a) Adverbs were formed by adding the suffix “ly”: example
