"I hear America singing"?
1) What class of people did Whitman choose to portray? Why?
Mr. Whitman speaks of every possible positioning within the workforce. From the boss right down to the bottomof the work chain.  Whether mechanic, carpenter, mason, boatman, deckhand, shoemaker, wood cutter or ploughboy, there was a song to sing. Possibly Mr. Whitman was saying that each person had a storyto tell. Each story is different from the other yet they all have the chance to speak it. Was Mr. Whitman suggesting the freedom of The United States when he speaks of each having his own song? It ishighly likely that Whitman was speaking of the great freedom the United States had to offer every citizen, no matter the financial positioning they held.
2) Why does the speaker use differentprofessions in the poem?; What do these occupations suggest about his vision of America?
Whitman mentions no brilliant artists or corporate executives. The people in his poem are common folk withoutindividual names, but in his celebratory verse they are all idealized. Each one finds joy in the dignity of his or her labor.
This poem underscores Whitman's basic attitude toward America, which is part ofhis ideal of human life. The American nation has based its faith on the creativeness of labor, which Whitman glorifies in this poem. The catalog of craftsmen covers not only the length and breadth ofthe American continent but also the large and varied field of American achievement. This poem expresses Whitman's love of America — its vitality, variety, and the massive achievement which is theoutcome of the creative endeavor of all its people. It also illustrates Whitman's technique of using catalogs consisting of a list of people.
3) What does “each singing what belongs to him or her and tonone else” (line 9) mean?
This can be taken to mean that all are equal there in the United States of America. It may be true that when Walt Whitman wrote this poem women didn't have the same rights...
