ABISMO CHALLENGER
El abismo Challenger es el punto más profundo medido en los océanos. Se encuentra en el grupo de las islas Marianas en el final sur de la fosa de las Marianas. La tierra más cercana es la isla Fais, una de las islas exteriores de Yap 289 km al suroeste y Guam 306 km al noreste. El punto obtiene su nombre gracias al barco de la Marina Real Británica HMS Challenger, que fue eldescubridor de la fosa en 1875.
La máxima profundidad medida del abismo Challenger es de 10.923 m (National Geographic estima la profundidad en 11.034 m bajo el nivel del mar). La presión a esa profundidad es aproximadamente 1095 veces la de la superficie.
La expedición del HMS Challenger (diciembre de 1872 mayo de 1876) fue la primera en sondear las profundidades conocidas hoy día como elabismo de Challenger. El primer sondeo fue hecho el 23 de marzo de 1875, en la estación 225. La profundidad registrada fue de 4.475 brazas (8.184 m), basada en 2 sondeos separados.
El libro de Sir John Murray The Depths of the Ocean [Las profundidades del océano] del año 1912, registra la profundidad del abismo como 9.635,9472 m (31.614 pies). Sir John fue uno de los científicos de la expedición, unhombre joven en ese tiempo. La página 131 del libro de Murray se refiere al abismo. En 1951, unos 75 años después de su descubrimiento, la fosa de las Marianas al completo fue explorada por el navío de la Armada Real Británica HMS Challenger, llamado así por el barco de laexpedición original. Durante esta travesía, la parte más profunda de la fosa fue medida usando sondaje por eco, una forma mucho más precisa y sencilla de medir la profundidad que el equipo de sondaje usado en la expedición original. El HMS Challenger midió una profundidad de 5.960 brazas (10.900 m) en las coordenadas 11°19′N, 142°15′E.
CHALLENGER DEEP
Challenger Deep is one of the deepest surveyedunderwater location in the world. It is a small slotted valley located at the very end of the Mariana Trench a deep sea trench located off the western coast of the continent of Asia and right off the Mariana Islands. It is over 11,000m deep. To get a good idea of how deep that is you would be able to put Mount Everest at that spot and there would still be a 1000m of water left above it. For people whodon’t think in metric measurements that means the trench is around 7 miles deep and even if you put Everest in there there and stood on the tip there would still be a mile of ocean above you. That is about a third the distance to the resting place of the Titanic which is 3 miles below sea level.
The Challenger Deep gets its name from the HMS Challenger expedition which was the first mission ofits kind to do a sounding of Challenger deep. The HMS Challenger was an exploration ship that was used as part of one of the earliest Oceanography expeditions. The goal of the journey was to do surveys of various ocean features. The very first sounding was done March 23, 1875. Much later in 1960 the first manned exploration of Challenger Deep occured. This where we get its official depth. However,the intrepid explorers were only able to stay for 15 minutes. This was due to a crack in the window of their submersible as well as reduced visibility caused by the dust that was stirred up by their landing.
So what makes such a deep location? The answer is plate tectonics. The earth’s crust is not one whole piece. It is broken up by pressure and heat from the mantle below into what seismologistscall tectonic plates. The plates float on the vast sea of molten magma directed by the convection currents in it and the process called sea floor spreading. Trenches like the Mariana Trench where the Challenger deep is located occur in regions of subduction. This is where one tectonic plate sinks beneath the other.
