Frame Relay is a high-performance WAN protocol that operates at the physical and data linklayers of the OSI reference model.

Eric Scace, an engineer at Sprint International, invented Frame Relay as a simpler version of the X.25 protocol to use across Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) interfaces. Today, it is used over a variety of other network interfaces as well. When Sprint first implemented Frame Relay in its public network, they used StrataCom switches. Cisco'sacquisition of StrataCom in 1996 marked their entry into the carrier market.

Network providers commonly implement Frame Relay for voice and data as an encapsulation technique, used between LANs over a WAN. Each end user gets a private line (or leased line) to a Frame Relay node. The Frame Relay network handles the transmission over a frequently changing path transparent to all end users.

Frame Relayhas become one of the most extensively used WAN protocols, primarily because it is inexpensive compared to dedicated lines. In addition, configuring user equipment in a Frame Relay network is very simple. Frame Relay connections are created by configuring CPE routers or other devices to communicate with a service provider Frame Relay switch. The service provider configures the Frame Relay switch,which helps keep end-user configuration tasks to a minimum.

COMUNICACIÓN DE MENSAJES
Si un mensaje simple como un meil o un video se transfiere como un stram masivo esto significa queningún otro dispositivo podrá usar la red mientras esta transferencia de datos este en curso por lo que estos grandes streams ocasionan un gran retraso y si el envió es interrumpido o hay alguna falla se perderá toda la información y tendrá que reenviarse todo.
Una forma más eficaz de hacer una transmisión de datos es hacer una segmentación del stream en pequeños paquetes más manejables esto tiene dosventajas importantes:
Primero, al enviar partes individuales más pequeñas del origen al destino, se pueden entrelazar diversas conversaciones en la red. El proceso que se utiliza para entrelazar las piezas de conversaciones separadas en la red se denomina multiplexación.
Segundo no es necesario que cada una de las partes separadas sigan el mismo recorrido que las otras desde el origen hasta eldestino, si una ruta en particular falla o se satura los paquetes pueden tomar direcciones alternativas además de que si alguna parte del mensaje n llega o se pierde solo tiene que ser retransmitida.

La ruta que un mensaje puede ser simple como un cable de una computadora a otra o puede ser una ruta muy compleja como una red que abarque todo el mundo. Estainfraesestructura es la plataforma que respalda la red humana y proporciona un canal estable y confiable por el cual se producen las comunicaciones.
