“How the seventies changed America”
In his article, “How the seventies changed America” Nicholas Lemann, presents the idea that for a lot ofAmericans, the 70’s decade was the “looser decade”. But it doesn’t come as a surprise that the author finds this among the American people, after all the proof is in the putting. When we think about the 70’s we get sucked back into the violence, the unrest, the foolishness, thedishonesty and disappointment, and above all the mistrust on the government from its citizens.
But it is not fair to blame the 70’s for being a“looser decade” the author does make a reference of the 60’s having something to do with the 70’s bad luck spree. “The Character of the seventieswas substantially shape at first by spillover from the sixties” (396), this makes a lot of sense. It would be like the sins of the fathers passedon to their children. Decisions of key players on the prior decade are the ones to blame for the riots at the gas pumps, fear of terrorists,double-digit inflation, the explosion of crime, the Nixons Watergate scandal and the hostage crisis. The sixties Gave birth to a revolution. Arevolution on the social, cultural and political arena, the 70’s was just a necessary (or unnecessary) casualty. Regardless whether that decadewas a loser or not, one thing is for sure ‘it taught us a lot of valuable lessons’. Now is up to us to learn them and don’t repeat them.
