History
Aglomerados Cotopaxi S. A. (“ACOSA”) was founded in 1978 by a group of visionary businessmen led by Mr. Juan Manuel Durini Palacios who started in the forestry and lumber industry 30 years before. In 1979, Aglomerados Cotopaxi S. A. started the production and introduced in Ecuador particle board with a modern line of state of the art technologyimported from Germany. At the end of the same year it incorporated the first line for overlaying boards in the country. This gave a higher aggregate value to its products and expanded the range of colors according local and international market requirements.
From the beginning, ACOSA has been conscious that raw materials should come from renewable forestry resources, and in 1978 the company made itsfirst purchase of pine forests and land for forest plantations with the intention of developing forestation and reforestation.
To get the maximum benefits from forestry resources, in 1995 ACOSA started an industrial sawmill to satisfy market requirements for solid pine wood. We should note that all of the byproducts in this production line are used as raw materials in the fiberboard line.
In1996, ACOSA installed its second press which meant that it could overly boards with elegant wood sheets. The next year it opened the largest and most important MDF plant in the Andean region. Because of the novelty of

this product the company carried out an aggressive advertising campaign and made enormous training efforts in the use of MDF in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. These two activitiesyielded fruits. Since 1999, the entire MDF production has been sold and arrives with fiberboard to the entire Andean Pact, Central and North America and some countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.
 In 2002, the company started a cycle of certifications and continuing improvement work and earned ISO 9001 certification for the quality of its work system. Currently the company is working to certify itsISO 14001 environmental work systems and its occupational safety and health system OSHA 18001.
In 2007, it updated its information technology systems and purchased an ERP from Oracle which helps improve and integrate processes. The same year ACOSA decided to renew its trademarks and corporate image and generated a new slogan, “Planting the Future” representing the company’s vision.
In 2008, ACOSAwas 30 years old and consolidated its leadership as the largest lumber industry in Ecuador with an annual production exceeding 130,000 cubic meters. It has forestry assets of 14,000 hectares with 11,000 hectares planted with radiata and patula pine, and the remaining 20% allocated to protected areas for the preservation of the areas’ own ecosystems, preservation of native forests, protection ofhydrographic basins and other environmental benefits.
