ALCATRAZ
Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay. Often referred to as "The Rock" or simply "Traz", was one of America’s most infamous federal penitentiaries. It hosted more than 1576inmates and 4 wardens over a period of 29 years (the prison held an average of 260 inmates at any one time). Its name, Alcatraz came from the Spanish name Alcatraz for its abundance of birds, especiallyfrom those species.
The place served as a military and federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 when the last inmates were transferred off the Rock and Alcatraz is abandoned by the U.S. Bureau ofPrisons. In November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of American Indians from San Francisco, who were part of a wave of Indian activism across the nation, with publicprotests through the 1970s. Later, in 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today, the island's facilities are operated by theNational Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Alcatraz was a small civil penitentiary; but in 1898, the Spanish-American war increased the prisonpopulation from 26 to over 450. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, civilian prisoners were transferred to Alcatraz for safe confinement. On March 21, 1907, Alcatraz was officially designated as theWestern U.S. Military Prison; in 1909 construction began on the huge concrete main cellblock, designed by Major Reuben Turner, which remains the island's dominant feature.
