The Telephone
Amongst living beings a basic need for contact and communication is needed, where it would be an action, movement, dance, song or language. As a species, us, human beings use languageas ways to intercommunicate. The telephone is a complex system used to this day to communicate amongst social groups (either ours or different ones) across different distances, it is considered to bethe beginning of what came to be the wave of massive media (radio, Tv, etc), also for some it was the beginning of what caused the lack in humanity’s rationalization, diminished cognitive processing,etc (McLuhan and Postman).
Several objects existed and were invented before the telephone, all for the purpose of communicating more clearly and quickly through space, on 1680 acoustic tubes wereused, up to 1850 when the telephone started to become theoretically possible invention, and on 1876 Bell patented his invention (some say there was a timing issue with Mr. Grey’s patent, not to mentionthe money and established connections Bell had in high places). Improvements continued to be made up to the 20th century when most families had a personal phone, the first not-wired calls were madeto planes, organization, congress and other kind of groups were formed to try and exploit the new most-wanted product by the public.
The telephone while bringing new stimuli not ever heard before(transmission of clear voice and tones) also was accepted more quickly due to the fact that up to that time only optical and sight stimulation existed (such as photography and the telegraph), with thetelephone a new area, “acoustics”, was found and exploited, it was a great, new way of communicating, it would apparently improve greatly human lifestyle. As mentioned before, this new invention broughtabout a lot of “unexpected consequences” (Levinson, 1998) that were probably not foreseen.
