Bulimia

Bulimia nervosa or bulimia is part of a psychological disorder and an eating disorder. It is a behavior in which the individual moves away from healthyeating patterns on overeating eating very short time periods (which would generate a temporary feeling of well-being), then seek to eliminate excess food through fasting , vomiting, purging orlaxatives
Etymological origin
Comes from the Latin bulimia, which in turn comes from the Greek βουλῑμια (Boulimie), which consists of βούς (search), ox and λῑμος (slime), excessive hunger hambre.1 meansox or hunger.
Essential characteristics
One of its key features is that the person has episodes of binge eating, followed by a deep sense of guilt and a sense of anguish and loss of mental controlby eating "excess". Usually alternate with periods of fasting or very low food intake, but soon re-emerge compulsivas.2 eating episodes
Another essential feature of this disorder are inappropriatecompensatory behavior to prevent weight gain. Many individuals use various means to try to compensate for binge eating: the most common is self-induced vomiting. This method of purging (cyclical patternsof overeating and purging) will use 80-90 percent of the subjects that come to clinical centers for treatment. The immediate effects of vomiting consist of the immediate disappearance of physicaldiscomfort and decreased fear of gaining weight. Other purging behaviors include excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, enemas, physical exercise and intense ayuno.3
Diagnostic criteria for bulimiaBoth the DSM-IV and ICD-10 agree that, in order to diagnose bulimia nervosa, binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors must occur at least 2 times a week for three months.
