Analytical essay on my selected extract from – The Deep Dark Secrets by R. L. Stein
My extract is from a series of horror novels. Many short, simple sentences have been used throughout. “Lucy stoodup” one of the characters is in a rush to leave, because she doesn’t want to talk about the death of a friend. There is a use of a complex sentence “Although it would be impossible to concentrate onreading anything” this has been said because the character has been through a rough few days and probably has a lot to think about.
“How could anyone in Glenview be cheerful these days?” and “Wasn’teveryone having nightmares?” these interrogative sentences have been used as a sign of despair and worry as it explains earlier in the book that the town the protagonist is living in had beensuffering from many losses lately. There’s a modal auxiliary “could”, too.
The metaphor “I’m being let out tomorrow, so don’t make it War and Peace, OK?” is said because as the protagonist is in hospitalafter a serious accident she’s not looking for people to know, thinking it will cause her a hassle, as she’s mentioned earlier in the book to her mother, “I’m not looking for any sympathy, I’m fineand I just want to get out of here” although this does not appear in the extract.
Another metaphor “Sophie’s face twisted with cynicism” is telling the reader that the character Sophie is clearly indisbelief by what she’s saying and most likely disappointed by the fact the protagonist would suggest such an idea.

Straight after that she says “You’re asking us to help? Isn’t that like askingsomeone who’s never skied to teach you how to slalom?” And this is a simile. It’s pointing out that she thinks there’s nothing she can do to help her, that it’s almost impossible. On the next sentencethere is a use of a reflexive pronoun “ourselves” talking about her group of friends.
